Multiband Sidechaining – Not Just for Kicks Anymore
Forget the old “kick-ducks-everything” approach. If your sidechain compression is still globally ducking entire synth buses every time a kick hits, it might be time to level up. Enter multiband sidechaining — a surgical way to create space in your mix by ducking only specific frequency ranges instead of the entire signal.
Let’s say you have a big reese bass that lives across the full spectrum. Instead of sidechaining the whole bass to the kick — which can sound too obvious or suck the energy out — you can only duck the sub frequencies, letting the midrange growl stay present while the kick punches through cleanly.
See the video below for a tutorial on how to do this using Fabfilter Pro-MB
It’s not just useful on bass. Try multiband sidechaining your pad stack so only the low mids duck slightly when a snare hits. Or sidechain the hi-mids of your synth lead every time a vocal comes in — clearing just enough room without compromising the whole texture.
Most DAWs let you do this with a multiband compressor that accepts sidechain input — like Ableton’s Multiband Dynamics, FL Studio’s Maximus, or third-party plugins like FabFilter Pro-MB, Trackspacer, or ShaperBox. The key is isolating the conflict frequency, applying subtle compression or volume ducking, and preserving the rest of the spectrum.
Used tastefully, multiband sidechaining adds space, punch, and clarity — all without the over-pumped feel of traditional full-band sidechain.
