WHATS BUZZING

The Mirage Saga Continues: CEO Out, Venue Still Dark

Many have been keeping an eye on the Brooklyn Mirage situation, so here's the latest update โ€“ and it's not great news.

Three weeks after that devastating opening night cancellation, the Mirage is still shuttered, and now CEO Josh Wyatt has been shown the door. Wyatt, who only took the reins in October with big promises to "transform" the venue, got the axe on Thursday. Board chairman Gary Richards is stepping in to try and clean up this mess.

For those just catching up: the venue was supposed to reopen May 1st with a completely reimagined space โ€“ bigger dance floor, massive screens, next-level production. Instead, hours before Sara Landry was set to headline, they pulled the plug due to failed inspections.

The fallout has been brutal. City records show their construction permits are stuck in limbo, and they still don't have basic safety certificates. Even worse, that epic Anjunabeats takeover had to scramble across five different venues because nobody could handle their planned two-night experience.

The Mirage keeps posting those "thanks for your patience" Instagram updates, but Memorial Day Weekend came and went with zero progress. No new inspections scheduled, no concrete timeline, just radio silence when they promised updates by week's end.

Hopefully they sort this out soon โ€“ NYC's scene deserves it.

SHAPING THE SOUND

How To Approach Remixing a Track

Start Smart: Don't just pick any track โ€“ choose songs you genuinely vibe with that have clear room for improvement. You'll actually finish the remix if you're passionate about the source material. Take notes while listening and spot those gaps where you think you can improve upon.

Get Technical: If you're working without stems be strategic about which sections you can actually use. Sometimes the best remixes just swap out the drums and bassline while keeping the original tracks soul intact.

Creative Destruction: This is where it gets fun. Chop up the vocals, reverse sections, pitch things down 12 semitones for that deep house flavor. Your DAW's audio-to-MIDI function is your best friend when you need to extract the chord progressions.

Next Level Processing: Treat stems like sample packs. Grab single hits from basslines, mangle vocals into FX sounds, and throw heavy reverb on background elements for atmosphere. Sometimes the most basic techniques create the best results.

Community: Collaborate whenever possible. Two heads are always better than one, especially when you're both bringing different perspectives to the same source track.

Remember, there's no rules in this game โ€“ just guidelines.
